Flower Boy Ramyun Shop – Episode 3 Recap

We are back to the awkward situation that Chi-Soo had set up at the gym. I don’t know what he’s thinking in his head, but going out with a girl is far from a threat in my dictionary. You know, I would constantly anger him, if he threatened me with us dating. Yep.

Chi-Soo leaves the gym, running into his buddies who are curious about why he was in the building. He says he had to take care of something, and leaves with them.

While Eun-Bi is left in a shock, Dong-Joo rushes in saying that she should hurry to the hospital. Which Eun-Bi interprets that SHE needs a hospital for being like that with Chi-Soo. Dong-Joo, confused, tells her that Ahjussi fainted and that he’s in ER right now. Ahjussi referring to Eun-Bi’s Dad.  Worrying, she hurries to the hospital finding Rooster crying over a man who’s face is hidden in bandage. At which Eun-Bi responds with a hit-on-the-head, saying the obvious: that’s NOT Ahjussi. LOL. Right at this minute, the real Ahjussi turns up from behind with a plastered arm.

Next we see some familiar scenes. Or not? We’re in a plane, with the same music from Episode 1, where somebody reads a Japanese newspaper. The camera checks him out from head to toe, revealing only that it’s the same woman from the same scene checking him out. Hehe. Is she some middle-aged hag hunting for men on airplanes or what?!

This time, it’s our future Chef, who she aims at, who’s nicely greeting her in Japanese. Ohaio to you too~. Khm. She complains about traveling around alone and how lonely she is while drinking some red wine. Chef obediently listens her boring speech, but suddenly, he interrupts: “Umm…your lips…” She asks back if her lips are pretty, assuming him to be like Chi-Soo, but he just leans over and cleans the wine mark from her lips. Hah. He also suggests her to eat before drinking alcohol, and says that her lips are more warm than pretty and licks the wine from his finger. Bleh. Too. Much. Greesy.

Back to Eun-Bi, she’s talking about his father’s car accident with Dong.Joo, but soon enough, Dong-Joo changes the topic, saying that Eun-Bi is not looking so good from the morning. Eun-Bi asks whether Dong-Joo ever had to deal with someone hitting on her in school. Like a younger teacher. Or a somebody younger. Maybe like a student or something. Haha. I like how shy she’s about this, but Dong-Joo coolly asks back: “Did one of the students ask you out?” She tells her not to worry about them and ignore them if she wants to survive.

Dong-Joo drinks her beer and goes to buy a new one. In the shop, everybody is staring at someone coming in, dropping their faces, so we can tell that it’s someone really good-looking or just someone having something on their face. As he bumps into Dong-Joo we finally see his identity: it’s Chef! Yay! As Dong-Joo drops a few things from her hands, she starts cursing him until he picks those up, and she gets to see his face. As he apologizes in Japanese, she makes a 180 degree turn in style, and thanks him that he picked up the stuff with a wide smile also in Japanese. He smiles back, and walks away.

Meanwhile, Eun-Bi is left thinking about whether Chi-Soo was joking with her or not. “Even so, what about the kiss? Was that a joke too?…Nooo, his eyes were honest.” Lol, I love how naive she is. With flashbacks appearing, she gets confused if Chi-Soo would be seriously going to date her. But then appears So-Yi in her head, and wonders if then she would be the “other” girl. But there is also the change, Chi-Soo told her to keep. Is he telling her to take that and leave? Now she is totally confused. LOL.

She gets up and goes to a game machine, while Chef passes next to her. Wait, wasn’t Dong-Joo already waiting in the line to pay when he went in?! Or did all the women let him go to the cashiers before them?! Or where is Dong-Joo?! Now I AM confused.

He walks off drinking his bottle of milk with a STRAW, while Eun-Bi puts a coin in the machine and prepares to beat it. ‘Cause actually, it’s a beating game machine. Or I dunno what to call it. Seeing that, some ahjussis from the table next to her, start laughing at her saying that her arm is going to break if she’s going to hit that. At which, Chef turns his head. Eun-Bi warms up, makes a huge punch and breaks the record immediately. Leaving ahjussis in awe and putting a smile on Chef’s face. But Eun-Bi just shruds her shoulders and prepares for another punch. Right when Dong-Joo finally appears. Seriously, WHERE WAS SHE?! She stops Eun-Bi saying that she told her not to demonstrate her strenth in public and drags her away. Lol.

Back to Chef, he’s visiting the hospital trying to see somebody, but when the nurse asks about the patient personal info, he goes gloomy, complaining that he has to go through all his stuff in the backpack to find the info. He’s just like a little kid, with a wavering voice, and lying on the ground. And actually, he falls asleep. Right there. Just as the nurse start to panic, somebody pinches his nose and wakes him up. He looks up and smiles: “Boss!” Cute.

And guess who his boss is? Of course is Ahjussi. In the patient’s room, he scolds him that it took him 13 hours to get here, even thoug he’s dying. Chef talks back that seeing how he is he should be able to live another 13 years not only 13 hours and that he was the one who almost died, not Ahjussi. “I was going through airport security and they asked him to put down my bag and take off my jacket.  After I went through, they told me to put it back on. I spent an hour on that outfit! When I think about it…Ah!, I’m so tired I could die.” HAHA. Poor. Little. Him. With. His. Ego.

Ahjussi just brushes him off, and says that he should pay a visit to someone. At which, Chef gets curious about his wife and whether she has that sexy temper or not. Lol, I can see where this leads, and I like it.

Next morning, Eun-Bi goes to school, stating in front of the gate that she’s going to be cool about Chi-Soo and the “kiss” but as she turns around, she sees Chi-Soo and his buddies. As a result she finds herself hinding on the ground behing the school gate. Pft. But the other student teachers are noticing her, and she suddenly starts talking to the ants and compliments the other student teacher’s clothes (let’s call’em shortly ST). They say that they dressed up a bit, because it will be their first class, and ask if today wasn’t the first class for her too. She says that she decided to dress normally, ’cause it’s not cool treating the first class as a special occasion.

In the next moment, we see Eun-Bi before Coach, wearing a pink, body-fitting gym clothes. Pft. Coach asks her why she is dressed like that because there is no gym class today. “Why would seniors take a gym class?” They don’t?! Oooh, I wish I could go to high school in Korea. She only has to supervise over them, but she insist that she will hold her class. Which has only 2 students. Because everyone else chosed study hall. These two are not a help either, one of them says that he can’t even play basketball. That’s a shame, you know? Khm.

But for Eun-Bi’s rescue, Rooster comes in with three others to start playing. Eun-Bi is enlighted that even though there are only 4 who can play, there is no sight of Chi-Soo. Don’t dig your grave, girl. As soon as she’s finishing her thoughts, Chi-Soo and Buddies walk in, apologizing for being late. They prepare for playing, already arguing with each other (as Rooster and Chi-Soo) so Eun-Bi tries to escape between them to watch from the outside. But Chi-Soo stops her, saying that she should play with them, ’cause they’re uneven.

So she joins Rooster-team, and they start playing. And that’s when tha cat gets out of the bag. She and Rooster has a good teamwork, reading from each other’s faces, which startles Chi-Soo. But still, Eun-Bi tries to maintain his image. Which is a hard thing, when Buddies start to attack her, saying one other that they must be a masochist or a sadist or that she should just only lean on them. Which makes me puke. How I hate those pick-up lines. Bleeeeh. Sorry. As she succesfully dodges them, she tries to throw at the basket, when Chi-Soo grabs her waist: “Your arms may be thick, but your waist is so womanly.” And that finally works and she drops the ball. Oh, please. Okay, he said that your waist is womanly and he’s HOT and grabbing you, but he said that your arms are thick. Oookay, I shut up.

Watching from above, Coach asks Dong-Joo how Masung High’s Steel Pot aka Eun-Bi became like this. That’s a good question I was wondering from about 2 and a half episodes now too. Dong-Joo replies that she’ only becoming a human now, so he shouldn’t deter her and that she was less than an animal back then, playing volleyball. “Breakfast – BAM! Lunch – BAM! Dinner – BAM!” Haha. But Coach says that it’s not Eun-Bi who’s becoming a human but her, because of her raises and cuts. “That’s not plastic surgery, that’s a comlete facial reconstruction.” Wahaha. You’ve got that back, girl.

We switch to the teacher’s room, where Eun-Bi gets scolded for making seniors play basketball. Now that’s not normal too. As it seems like, everybody is afraid that the children would get heart playing sports. Accurately, they’re afraid of Chi-Soo. Eun-Bi is not so stupid to not know that and she venges her anger on the sweeper while cleaning up the gym. She also kicks a ball into some boxes, which make the crush. She hurriedly puts them in order, but suddenly she’s hearing some talking, so she hides herself. It’s Chi-Soo and Buddies, and one them is questioning whether Chi-Soo likes Eun-Bi or not, ’cause he hates sweating, but Chi-Soo just smiles.

But Long-haired Buddy gets an SMS and he starts complainig about a girl who is clinging to him and he can’t get rid of her. When Chi-Soo advises him to say that she’s pretty, he says that she’s not pretty at all, and that he was blinded by the lights in the club.

Chi-Soo: “Then…then say that her mole is pretty. Even on the most unbelievably hideous face, a mole is usaually pretty. If you tell her she’s pretty, she’ll be quiet for at least 5 seconds.”
Long-haired Buddy: “And after those 5 seconds?”
Chi-Soo: “Kiss her on the forehead. Then she’ll be quiet for at least a week, not being able to sleep for days.”
Long-haired Buddy: “But why on the forehead? Why not on the lips?”
Chi-Soo: “On the forehead because! It’ll seem more genuine.”

Oh. You. Are. Such. An. Ass. (not like we didn’t know that, but still.)

As they are walking on the corridor, Eun-Bi shouts after Chi-Soo with a volleyball in her hand. they turn around, and seeing the ball, Chi-Soo says that it’s okay being enthusiastic, but as for today, he’s tired and doesn’t want to play volleyball too. But with a poker-face, Eun-Bi takes her name tag off, and says that she will count to 3, and than hit him, sop he should brace himself. And as said, she counts and hits him with the ball. That should hurt. Eun-Bi tells him not to mess with her again and walks away. At least she wants. But Chi-Soo yells after him, and reaches after her shoulder, but his hand gets stopped. By Chef. Yay! Now everybody is together for the first time. Chef says that he shouldn’t do that to a girl, especially not his wife. Shocked, both Chi-Soo and Eun-Bi ask: “Wife?!”

But we can’t get a further explanation as Dong-Joo and the head Teacher is coming and dragging away Chi-Soo and Eun-Bi. As everybody goes back to classes, the corridor is left empty. But where is Chef? Sleeping on the ground: “So tired, everything is tiresome. Everything…totally…So tired.” ROFL. But one student goes to him saying that he can’t sleep there. He asks why he can’t and who he is. “I’m the hall monitor.” Suddenly Chef gets up: “Oh, then I must get up. Hall monitor is the most sacred job in the school.” Omo, I love you. Khm. He asks the hall monitor Chi-Soo’s name.

While Eun-Bi was dragged to the principal. She has to go home, and after the board-meetin they’ll call her with the results.

At the hospital, the doctor is stating that Chi-Soo has no problems yet, but since he was hit from a professional volleyball player, he should stay a few days resting. Chi-Soo is only concerned about the word “hit” and says that “attacked” would be more proper. After the doctor leaves, Daddy investigates him with the secretary:

Daddy: “Which side did you get hit? I can’t tell. Let me see your head, no your neck. Over there?”
Secretary: “No, he got hit on that side.”
Daddy: “Did he get hit by a basketball?”
Secretary: “No, he was hit by a volleyball.”
Daddy: “Oh, good, it wasn’t a basketball.”
Secretary: “Yes.”
Daddy: “This is the first time he’s been hit since he was born. Will he be okay?”
Secretary: “It’s the first time he’s ever been hit and he was hit with a volleyball, so he was hit  pretty hard.”

That’s when Chi-Soo had enough of the word “hit” and gets up from the bed, leaving. As Daddy asks why and where he is going, and whether he should fire Eun-Bi, he replies that he shouldn’t fire her, and that he should never use the word “hit” in front of him. Oh, you poor thing and your pride. Lol. I’m cracking up. Chi-Soo goes out and Daddy asks Secretary if Chi-Soo’ mad. However the answer is no. He is not mad, but embarrased. Lol.

At another patients room, Eun-Bi is having a fun time with Ahjussi and the other patients, watching TV. It’s fun to see how Eun-Bi’s and Ahjussi’s expressions change the same way while watching the broadcast. It proves how similar they are, as father adn daughter. Suddenly, Ahjussi says he has heard that Eun-Bi was fired. He tells her that teaching doesn’t suit her, and that she should’ve stuck with volleyball

. But Eun-Bi sees that with volleyball, she can’t earn money, and that she’s not going to live off ramyun. Ahjussi “counterattacks” her: “You”re getting old. You can’t even afford botox, why are stressing yourself?” Lol. He tells her to do what she wants and have a calm life. Even though she wouldn’t make a lot of money, but at least she wouldn’t look pathetic. Like him. To get another topic, Eun-Bi asks why Ahjussi is not eating. He claims that the food is too bland, and that he only wants ramyun.

At Chi-Soo, So-Yi is visiting her, asking a bunch of questions whether he’s going to fire Eun-Bi, or if he wants to eat anything, etc. However, Chi-Soo shuts her up, saying that she’s prettiee when she doesn’t talk. Ehh. Why would you go out with someone like this? Yeah, I know he’s hot. That’s the only thing he has right now. At the background, Ahjussi is watching them over a newspaper, while Rooster is coming to him. But of course, they notice each other, and So-Yi happily greets him. Seriously?! After you’ve dumped him like that? She tops that with asking if he wants to eat with her, since Chi-Soo wants to be alone. Rooster doesn’t need anything more, just as me, and is bursting out: “What?! Eat?! Eat??!! EAT???!!!” and dashes away. So-Yi jsut shrugs her shoulders, asserting that Rooster must be still mad. You’re really clever.

After she leaves, Ahjussi asks Chi-Soo if she was his girlfriend. Ahjussi asks him a few things, and says that because he must have eaten only cold food in his life to be so cold inside, touching his chest. But Chi-Soo pushes Ahjussi away. Only realizing that he grabs his own chest, suffering and saying that he is dying. Chi-Soo offers to call the doctor, but Ahjussi grabs him: “No, no doctor. I need something else. Something else.” Chi-Soo asks if he has medicine. Ahjussi, agreeing, tells him that if he goes to his house, he will find something in a steel pot. It makes his heart swell up, and his body warm up. His precious ramyun. He wants Chi-Soo to come with him to the shop and eat some too. But Chi-Soo shakes him off. He tells Ahjussi to not make a show in front of him again, or he’ll get him fired, and leaves. Ahjussi is a disappointed that he couldn’t find a new kid to take under his wing, but suddenly, he really collapses. Chi-Soo turns around at the sound, but since he’s not seeing anybody, he leaves. While Ahjussi remains on the ground.

Actually, Rooster was waiting for So-Yi, and they eat together. So-Yi offers him to date again, same time as she’s dating Chi-Soo. Rooster flares up, but So-Yi explains him that it’s for his own good. She can only date him, if she’s dating Chi-Soo too. And how does that make sense? He has that much power to break them off if he doesn’t get what he wants? Or is So-Yi only playing with Rooster? Waah, I can’t decide.

Eun-Bi is waiting for the elevator with some ramyun for his father, when the elevator opens with Chi-Soo inside it. He smirks, thinking that she came to see him. Eun-Bi gets on, and as waited, Chi-Soo already states that she came sooner than he thought. He laments about his neck hurting and tells her he’s not in the mood to accept her apology. That’s when Eun-Bi gets off. Pft. Mad enough, Chi-Soo jumps off too and is asking if she hasn’t come to apologize. But she tells him, that he should be apologizing since he was the one who did something bad. But of course Chi-Soo only sees that he was the one that got hit (You can use this word? Lol). As he’s talking, suddenly, Ahjussi is pulled on a hospital bed next to them, accompanied by Chef. Eun-Bi wants to run after them, but Chi-Soo holds her back. Eun-Bi pushes him away, yelling at him, and runs away, throwing the ramyun in Chi-Soo’s arms, who’s left clueless.

Sitting on the corridor, a doctor comes and tells her something. She’s left without words, and is only standing there with a wor risome expression. Dong-Joo and Coach come too, hugging her. Oh, please, did you kill Ahjussi? WHY? Now my mood is dropped.

Meanwhile, Chi-Soo is wondering what’s in the plastic bag, and notices Rooster. Happily, he asks him to give the bag to Eun-Bi and starts his prince-like-speech, but Rooster just ignores him and go past him. In suits. Whyyyy?

Upset, Chi-Soo follows them to realize that Rooster and his buddies were going to a funeral. And are bowing in front of Eun-Bi. Confused, he notices the photo of Ahjussi.

Back in his room, he takes out the package from the plastic bag, and finds the steel pot with ramyun Ahjussi was talking about. Flashback:
At the funeral, he wanted to give the bag back to Eun-Bi saying that there’s a strange smell from it, but Eun-Bi tells him to throw it out. “Fortunately, I no longer have to eat that stuff, so throw it out.” Aw, both of you are cruel.

After the funeral, Eun-Bi is waked up by Coach. She gets up, giving back the jacket which was layed on her, but Coach says it’s not his. As they are leaving with the bus, we see Chef looking at them, without a jacket. Yeas, we knew it would be yours.

At the shop, Eun-Bi is cooking, while at the hospital, Chi-Soo is getting through the channels on TV woth a depressed face. As a cleaning woman comes in, he picks out the plastic bag from the trash and reads the info about the shop.

Eun-Bi is eating. Ramyun. She has some drink too, and recollects her memories about his father, when he teached her how to drink. Of course, at that time she had only milk.

Another shot, another memory. Eun-Bi is drawing on the table, the one, we saw in the previous episode. Ahjussi scolds him for doing that, but after seeing what she wrote, he laughs and pinches her cheeks.

However, it’s time for some bad memory. It’s when she left him, throwing heavy sentences at him about being poor and letting her mom die. He slaps her face, and she leaves. Just like the two other, younger Eun-Bis.

Eun-Bi: “Don’t leave. Don’t leave. Don’t leave Dad here all alone. Dad will be too lonely. After closing time, did you stand there waiting for me every night? With mom gone…and me gone too. Were you here alone every single night? I thought I was the only one without mom. I thought I was the only lonely one. You’re alone too. I didn’t know. I’m sorry Dad. I’m sorry.” She bursts out crying.

Ahjussi goes to her, smiling.

Eun-Bi: “Dad. Dad, you didn’t leave me? Dad. I’m so sorry. I promise not to drink so much. And I won’t draw all over the place. But…that cigarette wasn’t mine. That was Dong-Joo’s. I lost my temper that time…that was why…So Dad, please don’t leave me here by myself. I’m sorry. Don’t leave me here by myself.

Dad: “I’m not leaving. I wouldn’t leave without you.”

But as she hugs him, we can see that it’s not her dad she’s hugging. It’s Chef. Good job.

At the same time, Chi-Soo is coming with his car. He stops in front of the shop, and gets out.

Eun-Bi realizes that her dad is looking too young.

Eun-Bi: “Are you really my father?”
Chef: “No. I’m not your father but I’m your husband.”
Eun-Bi: “Huh? Husband?”

Just like this, Chi-Soo is watching from outside.

Author’s voice:

Woah, this was an amazing episode. It made me go from overly happy and laughint to overly depressed and crying. Well, okay, I didn’t cry, but I can’t cry easily, and I really got depressed and sad. I wanted to see Ahjussi more, acting with Eun-Bi, Rooster, Chef and Chi-Soo. I really liked his character, so first I was quite upset when they “killed” him. However, after calming myself, I saw why they did this. We had to introduce the Ramyun Shop, and make it function with everybody, and firstly, in promotions, Ahjussi wasn’t mentioned at all.

But his death leaves us with some uneasy thing. Namely that Chi-Soo was the last one who saw him and talked to him. I don’t know if that’s the case, but maybe if he wasn’t such an ass, and looked back seriously, he could easily notice Ahjussi lying on the ground, and than maybe his life could be saved. Well, some self-conscience wouldn’t hurt Chi-Soo at all, but I’m afraid of future scenes where he could be accused of killing Ahjussi.

As for a happier topic, I hope the real, punk-Eun-Bi returns, and that she would kick Chi-Soo’s ass a bit more

But now I’m afraid that I like Chef better than Chi-Soo, so they should change him pretty soon. I almost never like the second lead better than the first, but this time, they made me waver well enough. And I hate that feeling. Blah.

By the way, love the ending song.
